HOOSIER SPOON

How the Legend Began

The 181 Team takes pride in creating authentic and warm spaces for our clients.  We’ve long  discussed how wonderful it would be to be part of these spaces after we completed the project.  To have a genuine connection with the people and things they used on a daily basis.

As time went on, we’ve also traded stories during breaks and after work.  Being Hoosiers ourselves, we inevitably talked about the myths of where the term ‘Hoosier’ came from.  After comparing stories and laughing about them we had an idea.  What if we took our skills, the desire to have a lasting connection with the community we’re helping build, and combined it with our own spin on the ‘Hoosier Legend’?  That’s how we got the Hoosier Spoon.

Hoosier Spoon makes handcrafted items for your home with the same level of craftsmanship you’ve come to expect from 181 Design and Build.  We will be making high quality kitchen and home goods with locally sourced hardwoods.  These products will be available through online drop sales and selected retailers.

The following story is the Hoosier Spoon Legend for your pure entertainment.  It is from this legend that we take our inspiration to provide quality kitchenware that will be a statement piece for future generations. To understand Hoosier Spoon you must first take a stroll down this unique Hoosier Legend.

THE LEGEND

Fannie lived near Vevay, IN right on the Ohio River.  She had a son named Tony and a daughter Caron. As any good Hoosier would do, they befriended a family across the river around Prestonville, Ky.  Lorena was married to Filburt and they had a son named Ezekiel.  Every Sunday the families would get together (after church service of course) for a potluck meal.  One particular Sunday Fannie, Tony, and Caron left their hand thrown casserole dish (Caron was a bit of a potter), and hand crafted spoon (Tony being a bit of a woodsmith).

The next day Filburt returned the casserole dish and a spoon.  However, this was not the spoon that was brought to the potluck.  Tony walked to the river where Ezekiel was standing on the other side.  Tony yelled to Ezekiel, “We need our spoon!”.  Ezekiel yelled back, “Who’s spoon?” Tony yelled, “What?” Ezekiel responded, “Who’s, your spoon?”.  Ezekiel kept taunting Tony with the same response over and over.  Tony, stirred with Ezekiel's rebukes, lost his footing and rolled down to the river's edge.

Defeated, Tony returned home to tell his mother. Fannie, with the “bad” spoon in hand, walked down to the river and tossed the spoon back to Ezekiel.  Fannie yelled, “Give us our spoon!” Ezekiel yelled back, “Who’s…your spoon?”  And so, the stalemate began.

Lorena started feeling the heat of the situation and realized that she couldn’t dare keep the spoon for herself.  She did what any rational person would do and hid the spoon in a field. Fannie, Tony, and Caron realized they would never get their cherished spoon back and decided to make their own spoon….Hoosier Spoon was born.
